There are certain places that could have only existed in a certain time. Speakeasies in the ’20s or sock-hops in the ‘50s come to mind, and for the Seventies, it is definitely Studio 54. The popularity of disco in the late ‘70s was never really re-created, but it was intense enough to launch several discotheques and nightclubs all around the country. Of all these clubs, Studio 54 was the most famous, and it was known for its opulent parties, celebrity sightings, and glittering fashions. Before the trend became substrate in the ‘80s, and the club shut down, it was the place to see and be seen in 1970’s New York City. Here are some amazing pictures of the palace of disco:

The bouncers were instructed to be incredibly selective with who they let in, preferring only a fashionable and attractive crowd.

Celebrities like Halston, Bianca Jagger, Andy Warhol, and Liza Minelli were frequent regulars.

Studio 54 was the first club where celebrities like Diana Ross helped to DJ and were a part of the festivities, which is now a mainstay of nightclubs.

There was an air of extreme opulence and a playful “we can do whatever we want” vibe to Studio 54 that has never been recreated.
